Ten Tips to “Winterize” Your Skin!

Contributor: Published On: 12/19/08

Dry, itchy, and flaking skin is a common condition during the winter months, when humidity is low and we spend more time indoors in heated surroundings. Your skin care regimen may require a tune-up with the change in season.

So what do dermatologists recommend to help your skin thrive in winter weather?

1) Avoid long baths, as soaking in hot water can be very drying to the skin.

2) Apply moisturizer, preferably free of perfumes, immediately after bathing or showering and frequently throughout the day.

3) Use a humidifier in your home, to increase the humidity in the air and on your skin.

4) If you develop “winter itch” (dry, itchy areas of skin), pay careful attention to these areas and apply moisturizer frequently. Avoid scratching these areas, which will only cause further damage to your skin.

5) Use lip balms or emollients, which can help you to avoid cracked, dry, and painful lips.

6) Because hands are exposed to the elements frequently, they are also prone to cracking. You should use a heavier cream moisturizer to treat problem hands.

7) Remember to keep your body well-hydrated from the inside out. Try to consume plenty of fluids throughout the day, avoiding caffeinated beverages which can actually act as mild diuretics (which reduce hydration).

8) Remember to pay special attention to your diet. Vitamins A, C, and E can be of benefit in keeping your skin healthy.

9) Apply sunscreen or use moisturizers containing sunscreen. Your skin can sustain damage from the sun during the winter, too!

10) Avoid tanning beds. Tanning beds can cause damage to the skin, and can make your skin drier.

Following these simple tips can help you to avoid winter skin issues and keep your skin looking fresh and beautiful!
