The next time you’re ready to hop into bed with someone, you might get carded. That’s because a new company, STFree Certifications, has begun issuing safe sex licenses to NYC residents.
Each card has a photo, a unique ID number, and on the back of the card there is a toll-free phone number. A prospective sexual partner can verify a card holder’s STD testing history via the phone line by entering the unique ID number from the card and a personal pin supplied by the cardholder.
STDs are more prevalent than ever in our society. Genital herpes affects 25% of the U.S. population, over 1 million Americans are infected with HIV, and HPV infects more than 6 million new people each year. In light of these alarming statistics, sexually active adults need to be careful about who they go home with.
Perhaps the 15,000 people who have signed up for STFree are motivated by more than just the desire to have safe sex – it may be that getting “certified STD-free status” is the fastest way to increase your sex appeal in the Big Apple.
