Farrah Fawcett, actress and model, whose hair provoked a generation of women to copy her style, succumbed to cancer after a lengthy and brave battle. Best known for her role as one of a trio of gorgeous crime fighters in the 1970's hit Charlie's Angels, she also won fame after posing in a red swimsuit, copies of which sold millions worldwide. Fawcett attempted to leave her image behind by pursuing more serious roles, such as the role of battered wife in The Burning Bed, which won her both critics and public acclaim.
Diagnosed with anal cancer in 2006, she sought traditional treatment for her illness in the US. At one point believing herself cured of cancer, she enjoyed a period of relative good health before learning that the cancer had not only come back, but had spread. She then sought controversial treatment in Germany. Fawcett also made the bold choice to create a documentary of her journey with her cancer, allowing a film crew to film her at her weakest moments, as she battled valiantly to beat her cancer. The documentary aired on May 15, 2009, and was estimated to draw 9 million viewers.
Fawcett was married to actor Ryan O'Neal, whom she described as the greatest love of her life. Although the couple had divorced, he was at her side throughout her battle with cancer. He took part in the documentary and has stated that he asked Fawcett to marry him again earlier this month. She agreed. He stated that they would wed as soon as she could "say yes".
The couple have one son together, Redmond, who was born in 1985.
