This week has brought surprising sexual revelations in the Japanese press, including a study linking the sexual habits of teenagers to their breakfast preferences. According to the Japan Family Planning Association, Japanese teenagers who skip breakfast have sex sooner than those who do not.
The study included about 1,500 respondents, and concluded that while Japanese middle school students who ate breakfast lost their virginity at age 19.4, those who skipped breakfast had sex for the first time at age 17.5.
While no one has explored the link between breakfast habits and sexual preferences in the United States (although I sense several PHDs are writing grant proposals as this is written), what’s certain is that Americans, on average, have sex sooner than the Japanese.
According to “American Sexual Behavior,” published in 2006, the typical American girl has at 17.3 years of age, while the average American male loses his virginity at 17.0 years old. A recent sexual health survey conducted by Sex Health Guru, the largest sexual health site on the web, had over 61,000 responses and concluded that 66.2% of Americans lose their virginity before age 18, and that only 13% of Americans are still virgins at the age of 23.
While the sex-breakfast link remains unexplored in the U.S., the Japanese at least seem to have found the reason for the mysterious link between breakfast habits and sexual proclivity in their society. Researchers now speculate that stronger family values lead are responsible for both the likelihood of eating breakfast and the decision to delay sex, creating the statistical link.
This supposition is anecdotally supported by other findings from the same survey: respondents who said that they disliked their mother had sex, on average, three years sooner (at age 16) than those who liked their mother.
Based on this, it seems that the major breakfast companies in Japan need not fear that teens will abandon their products in the hopes of accelerating their sex lives.
