Nothing puts the damper on a ski holiday like a serious injury, and this can be avoided for the most part by following some simple safety guidelines:

1. Invest in Lessons- If you are new to the sport of skiing, take lessons. Learn how to protect yourself by learning how to stop correctly and slow your speed.

2. Stretch Before Skiing- Skiing is like any other sport: if your muscles are properly warmed up, you will be more likely to avoid injury.

3. Wear a Helmet- You will be glad you did should your head have the misfortune of meeting a tree! This tip cannot be stressed enough. Be sure that children skiing with you wear a helmet as well.

4. Don’t be a Hero- Ski on slopes that match your skiing prowess. If you are a novice skiier, do not attempt to ski on expert slopes. This is a sure-fire way to cause yourself bodily harm.

5. Dress Properly- Skiing necessitates being outdoors in winter weather, so dress appropriately! It is far better to be warm than fashionable, and you will be glad to be warm after a day on the slopes.

6. Use Equipment that Matches Your Skills- Make sure that your skis, boots, and other equipment are suitable for your level of skiing expertise. Buying the right length of skis is crucial. If you are in doubt, ask an expert.

7. Watch Out for Other Skiers- Be aware of other skiers around you, and yield to them. This may save you (and them) an unnecessary collision, one that may result in injury to you both.

8. Stay Well-Hydrated- Your body will perform better for you if you ensure that you have enough water on board for the exercise you are demanding of your body.

9. Stop When You Become Fatigued- Don’t ski if you are physically exhausted; this is asking for an injury. Listen to your body and rest often.

10. Don’t Drink Alcohol While Skiing- Alcohol is dehydrating, impairs your judgement, and will make you more prone to injury. Save the drinking of alcohol for the end of the day, when you are finished skiing and are seated by a warm fire in a cozy ski lodge!
