With cold and flu season upon us, World Hand Washing Awareness Week is suitably placed to remind us how important hand washing is, and to review the technique of proper hand washing.

Hand washing is perhaps your greatest ally in the fight against germs. The past several years have seen an increase in concern in regards to a pandemic flu, the avian flu, and other infectious diseases. Hand washing is simply the most important step in breaking the chain of infection. Regular hand washing can decrease your risk of contracting the common cold or flu, which are prevalent this time of year.

Although most people are aware of when to wash their hands (i.e. before eating, after visiting the restroom, after handling uncooked foods), research shows that many people do not follow the correct procedure. Hand washing includes the following steps:

1. Wet your hands with warm water, apply soap, and lather.

2. Rub your hands together vigorously for a minimum of 20 seconds, paying careful attention to the backs of your hands, your wrists, and between your fingers.

3. Rinse the soap of thoroughly.

4. Dry your hands with a clean towel or paper towel.

5. Turn off the water using the towel. Do not touch the faucet with your clean hands!

Alcohol-based sanitizers have gained in popularity as the public’s fear of pandemic flu has increased. The CDC recommends using a product which contains at least 60% alcohol. Apply approximately half a teaspoon to your hands and rub them together until your hands are dry. Hands that are visibly dirty should be washed with soap and water.

Washing your hands frequently, using proper technique, can help prevent illness such as those caused by the common cold and flu.
