One of the most commonly prescribed drugs for infertility, Clomid, may not have any effect on a woman's ability to conceive, according to a new study by clinical researchers in Britain. Clomifene citrate, the generic name for Clomid, is taken by women to induce ovulation. The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal, examined three groups of women suffering from prolonged infertility. Each group received a different treatment protocol; one was given no medication, one was given Clomid, and a third was given unstimulated intra-uterine insemination, or IUI.
There was no statistically significant difference between the birth rates for these groups, and in fact, the group of women who received Clomid actually had the lowest birth rate of 14%.
