For women on certain antidepressants, Viagra may the key to achieving orgasm, at least according to a recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study was conducted on women taking SRIs (like Prozac or Paxil) to treat their depression. During the study, these women were asked to take a pill just prior to engaging in sexual activity. For half of the women, the pill was Viagra, and for half it was a placebo.

The women taking Viagra reported an improved ability to reach orgasm, and reported having more satisfying orgasms, than the women taking a placebo.? Even so, Viagra’s manufacturer, Pfizer, said that it had no plans to seek FDA approval to use Viagra as a treatment for sexual dysfunction in women?

Viagra, an oral therapy for erectile dysfunction, is the citrate salt of Sildenafil, a selective inhibitor of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). When the sexual stimulation causes local release of Nitric Oxide, inhibition of PDE5 by Sildenafil causes increased level of cGMP in the corpus cavernosum resulting in smooth muscle relaxation and inflow of blood to the corpus cavernosum.
